Frequently Asked Questions
The Israelis will never accept a deal like the JPA and withdraw.
Yes they will. Scratch the surface of the JPA and you will find
it is just as good a deal for them as it is for the Palestinians.
The Israelis are not stupid. They can figure out a good opportunity
when it is in front of them.
I don't see it. How is it a good deal for Israel?
It delivers security based on universal commitment to non-violence by Palestinians.
It implies recognition of Israel by all the surrounding Arab states. It guarantees
Israel's borders, its democratic system, and the rights and freedom of its citizens.
It lets tens of thousands of Israelis who have settled on Palestinian land (technically
illegal according to international law) transfer their homes to Israel by moving the
border to go round their townships.
land swap
You think that is enough? Israel wants all the West Bank settlements.
Technically, that would be difficult. They are undoubtedly on land that will
become sovereign Palestinian territory in any two-state solution and most Israelis recognize
this. It is a price worth paying for the huge benefits to them of the JPA overall.
It is worth noting that the agreement also allows settlers to become residents in Palestine
legally, if they satisfy certain simple conditions.
residence criteria
You think the settlers would stay, under the rule of Palestinians?
That is up to them and the Palestinian authorities. Some will do so,
most will not, so far as we can tell. The few that stay are friendly
with their neighbors who are citizens of Palestine, genuinely get on well with them
and so find it easy to ask them to sponsor their permanent residence
applications and maybe even form "parity zones" together. But those who
thought their settlement in the middle of the West Bank had been annexed to Israel
will be disappointed and will have to leave.
parity zones
Israel will never release all prisoners as the JPA demands.
Any prisoner of the conflict in detention is a potential seed of further strife and
terrorism. There will always be friends and relatives outside the prison walls
who believe their detention constitutes unjust oppression, especially if a lot of
other prisoners have already been released. So the Just Peace Agreement makes
no distinctions and treats all persons who have committed offences in the course of
the conflict as "Prisoners of the Conflict", equally. Only those who are
members of organizations that refuse to adopt the JPA will remain in prison.
prisoners
Overall, the JPA is a far better deal for Palestinians than for Israelis.
The JPA will work because it removes the root causes of hostility, hatred and
terrorism/resistance. The whole tenor and text of the JPA is driven by this
objective. It's no use having a "Roman peace" — a cosmetic solution that
just barely looks good enough to half the Palestinians. It has to be just, and be
seen to be just. It has to deliver justice that everyone who lives in the Land or is
a refugee from the Land can experience for themselves and believe in 100%.
That is the only solution that will remove the motives for terrorism and allow
Israel and Palestine to co-exist in peace and security, long-term. By
delivering exactly what Palestinians truly deserve and need, it delivers exactly
what Israel deserves and needs: peace and justice, equally for both states and peoples.
economic development
Israel maintains its security through oppression. Will that change?
Israel's strategy is mixed. They will have to change to the positive
strategy of supporting Palestine's economic development eventually, and they
already seem to understand that. The JPA will alter the situation
dramatically, making the objective of peace through economic development
perfectly clear, up-front. It will actually be possible to build up
Palestine's economy to parity with Israel's with the co-operation and international support
built into the JPA. It has been completely impossible with the road-blocks,
suicide bombings, counter-terrorism security checks, rocket fire and seiges
of the past decade.
economic development
Why does the JPA reward terrorism?
The JPA is not a reward. It is not appeasement. It is not
surrender. The JPA is justice, and the end of the conflict.
a line in time
The JPA is just a transparent attempt to buy off the terrorists.
This is the Just Peace. It is not cheap, but it is the best investment the
world — including Israel — can possibly make in future peace,
security and economic well-being. The input that is needed is not
just money and resources, but also honesty, courage, perseverance, co-operation,
brotherhood, mercy, compassion, and wisdom. These can bring atonement
for the past and hope instead of despair in the present. They cannot "buy off"
terrorists or anyone else, but they can avert great evil and darkness in the future.
